Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG) has issued a storm warning for western Austria. With a focus from Vorarlberg to the eastern Tauern, foehn gusts of 60 to 80 km/h are expected; in typical foehn corridors, up to 100 km/h are possible. On the mountains, the wind partly reaches hurricane force; gusts can reach up to 150 km/h.
According to ZAMG, the following possible effects may occur in the warning areas:
Branches may fall, and objects may be whirled around.
Increased risk of accidents due to solid crosswinds on bridges and exposed roadways, especially for trucks or when driving with large trailers
Fallen trees may cause isolated power outages.
Road, rail and air traffic may be impeded.
The forecast in detail
On Thursday, clouds will gather on the southern side of the Alps as far as Lower Carinthia with a robust southwesterly current; later, it may even start to rain. Everywhere else, the sun will shine at times, but high and medium-high cloud fields will pass through again and again. The eastern and northern foothills of the Alps will experience clearing fog and high fog in favourable locations. The wind will blow from south to southwest, sometimes briskly, in foreign zones and the eastern region. Early temperatures are minus 1 to plus 11 degrees, and daytime highs are significantly milder than last, with 13 to 21 degrees.
Friday sees a worsening of the situation in the south. Clouds will gather on the southern face of the Alps, and rain will occasionally fall from Lower Carinthia to East Tyrol, sometimes lasting longer and being heavier. Along the northern side of the Alps, the sun will appear at first, before more clouds will move in and rain will set in. It will remain predominantly dry from Upper Austria to Burgenland, where cloudy weather will predominate. During the day, the Föhn will blow stormily into the Föhn valleys, and further east to the Wechsel region, the southerly wind will blow strongly. Early temperatures are 4 to 15 degrees, and daytime highs are mostly 14 to 23 degrees, with the highest temperatures at Föhn and the very east.
